Project: Empowering Communities in Southern Ukraine through Health and GBV Initiatives

The Crisis and Support Centre
About the project
The project aims to ensure access to consultations with doctors of various specialties for residents of de-occupied and frontline communities in the Kherson and Mykolaiv regions, who as a result of the war have effectively lost the opportunity to receive regular medical care.
The destruction of medical infrastructure, a severe shortage of healthcare professionals, constant shelling, and the lack of safe transportation have made access to hospitals impossible for many people.
The project combines the work of mobile medical teams with the operation of telemedicine centers, enabling a comprehensive and sustainable approach to healthcare delivery. Telemedicine centers allow patients to consult doctors at any time, regardless of the mobile teams’ schedules, and to receive free medical consultations even under challenging security conditions.
Implementation period: August 1, 2024 — July 31, 2025
Project goal
To improve access to healthcare and protection services for vulnerable population groups, in particular women and children who are at risk of or have survived gender-based violence, in the Kherson and Mykolaiv regions.
Key objectives of the project:
-
to ensure access to primary and specialized medical care in remote communities;
-
to reduce barriers to accessing doctors of narrow specialties;
-
to establish a sustainable mechanism for accessing medical care;
-
to enable timely detection and treatment of diseases, preventing complications;
-
to support the most vulnerable population groups, including people with limited mobility.

Geographic Coverage
The project was implemented in the Kherson and Mykolaiv regions —areas that are regularly affected by shelling, creating ongoing risks for local residents and humanitarian teams.
Communities where mobile medical teams operated:
Kherson, Tyahynska community, Dariivska community, Borozenka community, Bereznehuvate community, and Velykooleksandrivska community.
During the reporting period, the mobile medical teams worked in 5 settlements, providing access to specialist consultations for residents of remote communities.
The locations where services were delivered:
Novosevastopol, Lepetykha, Vysoke, Lymanets, Borozenke,
Stiyke (Chkalove)
Telemedicine Centers
Telemedicine centers became a key component of the project, ensuring continuous and sustainable medical support for community residents in situations where in-person medical care is limited or impossible due to security risks, lack of transportation, or the remoteness of settlements.
The telemedicine format allows patients to receive consultations from doctors of various specialties directly in their own communities, significantly reducing the need for travel outside their place of residence. In addition, telemedicine centers provide comprehensive patient follow-up, including explanation of diagnostic results, adjustment of treatment plans, and referrals for additional examinations or hospitalization when necessary.

Throughout the project implementation period, patients accessed telemedicine consultations with a wide range of medical specialists, including cardiologists, endocrinologists, neurologists, dermatologists, ophthalmologists, urologists, and gynecologists. A significant share of consultations also addressed conditions related to the musculoskeletal system, digestive and respiratory systems, disorders of the blood and immune systems, as well as general medical consultations and ongoing management of chronic conditions.
Telemedicine centers are operating in:
Kherson (Shumenskyi district)
Lymanets
Borozenka
Vysoke

This mission was conducted with the participation of the Crisis and Support Centre of the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs in partnership with Médecins Du Monde France

How to support us in providing medical help civilians in frontline and de-ocuppited areas?
Provide medical equipment
We're always looking for ways to provide more needed medical services. For this, we need:
— portable ultrasound;
— portable blood analyzer;
— fluorography machines;
— ophthalmologist's equipment;
— mobile dental clinic / portable dentist equipment, etc.
We're open to different opportunities to add new examination methods we can use on the spot during our missions.
Donate for the immediate needs
Support us one time to help cover current needs: fuel, consumables, medicine, etc.
Provide the vehicle
We're looking for an off-road vehicle for our missions. The roads on de-occupied territories are poor, and our ambulances constantly need repairs. So we need a spare reliable transport to reach people constantly.
Support our sustainability
We are looking for sustainable funding for the organization to continue its work, save health and lives.
