Cancer screening

We visited telemedicine centres with an ultrasound doctor and a mammologist-oncologist.

We organized a visit to four villages in the de-occupied territories of the Kherson region. Thanks to joint work, palpation and ultrasound examinations of the mammary glands, serious suspicions of cancer were detected several times.

According to international standards, women after 40 should have a mammogram every few years. Currently, it is difficult for women from de-occupied villages to get a mammogram because there are few machines and there are long lines for them. In addition, they are located in cities where they need to travel tens of kilometres.

Such a combined examination with ultrasound and palpation can provide much information. In cases where suspicion is detected, the patient can already be referred for further examination and to specialized doctors.

The ultrasound doctor conducted 166 examinations, and the oncologist-mammologist—126 consultations. In addition, the mammologist trained nurses from telemedicine centres to perform palpation to independently identify pathologies and refer their patients to a doctor for follow-up examinations.

This project was created by CASERS thanks to a grant received from the Program "Support to Civil Society Organizations (CSOs)" in Ukraine within the financial support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Commonwealth of Nations and Development of Great Britain. The program is implemented by Crown Agents in partnership with International Alert and in cooperation with Crown Agents in Ukraine.
